Fordite, also known as Detroit agate or Motor City agate, is a unique automotive enamel material with an interesting history. The original layered automotive paint slag “rough” was made incidentally, years ago, by the now extinct practice of hand spray-painting multiples of production cars in big automotive factories.
Over time, many colourful layers of old automotive paint built up and was hardened sufficiently to be cut and polished and in recent times the material has been recycled into jewellery.
The old factory methods that created this incredible material are long gone. The Fordite “mines” are now dry.
All gems and diamonds are ethically sourced and set in fair traded New Zealand gold and silver.
